Most of Japan has two seasons that matter to a remote worker: hot and less hot. Hokkaido has four, and each one changes the working day. Temperatures below are typical Sapporo ranges, not a forecast.
02 · Where to base yourself
Four bases
You do not have to choose one. They are between forty minutes and three hours apart, and people move between them through the year.
03 · After work
The reason
people stay
Hokkaido is not a city with nature nearby. It is nature with a city in it. The nearest ski lift to central Sapporo is about forty minutes, which makes a Tuesday morning on the mountain an ordinary thing rather than a holiday.
04 · Food
Japan's pantry
Hokkaido grows and catches a large share of what the rest of Japan eats: dairy, potatoes, corn, scallops, crab, salmon, sea urchin. The practical effect is that an ordinary lunch near your desk is better than it has any right to be, and groceries are cheap.
